Claire Porter is a dynamic singer songwriter with a powerful voice who has been described as having the prowess and punch of Judy Garland mixed with the lyrical grit of Tom Waits.
‘Time Alone’ is Claire Porter’s debut album, an alt-lounge project that both soothes and disturbs, and it features 7 songs that all serve as singles.
‘Time Alone’ was released recently, with the album launch in July 2024, and recevied fantastic radio play locally in Canada, including a feature on CBC’s “First Listen”, regular rotation on the CBC Morning Show, inclusion on Exclaim! Magazine’s national playlist The Eh! List, and on the Just Us Folk Playlist as well as a full-page print profile in Le Gaboteur.
Claire Porter attended her first ever ECMA conference in St. John’s in 2025 and showcased twice!
Claire launched her album July 26, 2024, and animated four full length music videos herself. She also made four stop motion shorts for each single released before the album, and four hand drawn animated shorts for each single. She held off on the actual album release show until September 13th, 2024 at the Peter Easton Pub where she performed to a sold-out show, supported by The Dandelion Few and Midnight Watch.
Claire was invited by TODOS Productions to open for Vanessa Cardoso-Whelan’s play about domestic abuse starring Ana Luìsa Ramos, Bruno Vinhas, and Alicia Cruz, directed by Ruth Lawrence at the LSPU Hall in 2023.
Claire went to Trinity Hall in Winterton for Rob Wells and Naomi Shoba’s Songwriting Class sponsored by MusicNL in November 2023. She also took the Business Beginnings course taught by NLOWE and hosted by MusicNL from October 2021 – February 2022. Claire also took part in a two day French songwriting class in March 2022 hosted by Vanessa Borduas.
Claire Porter spent ten years in Montreal (2009-2019), cutting her teeth in the indie scene there. Claire performed across the indie circuit there, from Grumpy’s Bar (where they filmed Maury’s Version), Brutopia, Théâtre Sainte-Catherine, Le Cagibi, MtlImprov, The Montreal Arts Centre for FolkFest on the Canal, Pistolero, Pompette, The Wiggle Room, Cafe Mariposa, Shaika, The Yellow Door, Divan L’Orange, Barfly, along with many other venues, collaborating with Maïa Davis (recent Juno winner), Clerel (who recently opened for Mavis Staples), Lou Lou la Duchesse de Rière (New Orleans Queen of Burlesque 2018 and Top Ten Most Influential Burlesque Dancer in the World), Big Daddy, Santosh Lalonde, The Unsettlers, Bud Rice, Naghmeh, Jennifer Johnson, again, along with others. She focused on a multidisciplinary approach on learning, focusing on both stage performance (she took a year and a half of improv classes at the Théâtre Sainte-Catherine, taught by Sandi Armstrong, Lise Vigneault, and Alain Mercieca of Dépflies).
Claire is proud of the time she spent in Montreal, but she’s mostly excited to be home in Newfoundland, and she’s very proud of the impact her recent release, ‘Time Alone’, has had in Newfoundland and in radio stations across Canada! She’s looking forward to what comes next.
