Dee Hernandez – A Global Sound, Rooted in Cuba
Highlighted in an Artist Spotlight with Rogers TV and praised by Jully Black as “a win for Music, Culture Music, Black Music, and all the Music in our Country,” Dee’s music fuses her Cuban roots with jazz and pop, creating an infectious sound that resonates across cultures. In 2023, Dee made history as the first Latin American–born artist ever recognized by Music New Brunswick (MNB), a milestone that reflects her role in expanding the province’s musical and cultural landscape.
Dee is now gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated debut album—a collection of tracks that delve deeper into her signature blend of soulful rhythms and Afro-Cuban influences. This project encapsulates her evolution as an artist while staying true to her roots.
From performing at Canadian Music Week to gracing the soundtrack of a Toronto International Film Festival-featured film, Dee’s artistry transcends borders. Her music, inspired by legends like Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu, and Celia Cruz, tells stories of love, resilience, and cultural fusion. Whether delivering high-energy performances or intimate, heartfelt ballads, Dee’s sound is a celebration of rhythm, passion, and authenticity.
Praised by Sass Jordan as a “World-Class Jazz Singer” and recognized by Maritime Edit as “The Voice of Cuban-Canadian Jazz,” Dee continues to break barriers.
The upcoming album, Deshecha = Undone, is a full-circle moment for Dee—reconnecting with her roots while embracing her personal and artistic evolution. The album features four songs in Spanish and five in English, capturing the various moods and emotional states one experiences as a new Canadian. Through themes of love, heartbreak, resilience, and mental struggles, Dee shares her journey of navigating a new world while preserving her essence and overcoming the barriers that come with it.
