Hugh’s Room’s Global Holiday show is a celebration of music from around the world, and we’ve invited some of Toronto’s most acclaimed musicians from different cultural backgrounds to celebrate the spirit of the season and share their songs accompanied by a great house band under the direction of Michael Occhipinti. Featured singers include:
Kunle – An acoustic guitarist and singer/songwriter, Kunle’s folk and soul music bridges contemporary styles with roots in West African rhythms and stories. Nigerian-born and currently based in Toronto, Kunle brings together his rich vocals, unique guitar tapping, harmonica and talking drum to take audiences into what he terms ‘music with no boundaries’.
Ammoye – Ammoye’s music is a fusion of reggae, dancehall, and R&B, delivering powerful vocals and meaningful lyrics that explore love, empowerment, and social justice. Join the movement of positive vibes and infectious beats as she seamlessly blends tradition with a modern global flair.
Luanda – Born in Rio de Janeiro to a musical family, Luanda was blessed with a deep melodic richness early on. Now based in Toronto, Luanda taps into her vast knowledge of global rhythm to bring us an evening of bossa nova, funk, jazz and samba.
Eliana Cuevas – An award winning singer-songwriter and bandleader with unlimited colors in her compositional and lyrical palette, Eliana Cuevas blends her powerful and emotive voice with the traditionalities of her Latin American homeland.
Diana Di Mauro – Canadian-Italian mezzo-soprano Diana Di Mauro is known for her fine musicianship and charismatic stage presence. She possesses a dark, flexible voice that is both sweet as it is powerful and has both a vocal extension and dramatic intensity that allows her to captivate her audience in a wide variety of roles.
Louis Simão – The son of Portuguese immigrants and a first-generation Canadian, Simão seamlessly blends his cultural heritage with a distinct jazz sensibility and a chamber music compositional approach, creating a sound that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Just Prince – Toronto based singer-songwriter Just Prince is known for seamlessly blending Western and Eastern sounds into a harmonious tapestry with a captivating style that defies genre constraints. His music weaves elements of folk, rock, blues, and Hindustani classical music into a mesmerizing experience.
